STATE FAIR HISTORY
Did you know that the first Michigan State Fair was held in 1849 in Detroit and it was held there until 2009 until they lost government funding and could no longer hold the fair? To kick off our history feature, check out the oldest paper booklet from the 31st Michigan State Fair held in 1879. Inside the program it just included written directions to the fairgrounds, no pictures or maps! This program also included train and wagon schedules. Back then, they did not have a permanent location for the Michigan State Fair so it was held it multiple locations throughout Michigan, often in an open field!

RAM TRUCKS: POWER OF INNOVATION
KALEB'S STORY SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN
Today we are featuring our amazing volunteer Ken Cook. Ken Cook started volunteering with the Michigan State Fair Presented by Ram Trucks in 2015 and has been volunteering with us ever since. This year would’ve marked Ken’s sixth year volunteering for the fair so we were eager to talk to Ken about his experience volunteering with the fair.
Ken typically works at the Information Booth at the entrance to the fair throughout the weekend. He says that he loves this position because he’s usually the first volunteer our guests see and it is always a pleasure to assist people with finding their favorite events at the State Fair. It doesn’t stop there though, Ken is always willing to lend a helping hand wherever and whenever we need it during the fair, whether it be wrist banding or directing traffic, we can always count on Ken! When we asked Ken what made him want to volunteer with the Michigan State Fair, he told us that he considers himself a “professional volunteer” and is always on the lookout for a new challenge. When he saw the posting for State Fair volunteers in his hometown in Novi, he thought, “why not?” and has been hooked ever since.
For those considering volunteering for the fair, Ken exclaims that for years he’s been telling his volunteer friends how great it is to volunteer at the State Fair. He said that the number one reason he tells them this is the fact that the State Fair staff are great people to work with. He told us that the staff are always respectful and appreciative of your time and effort contribution. For a volunteer, this respect goes a long way. Plus, he tells us that he loves interacting with the guests and especially with the Shrine Circus clowns he’s learned to know over the years and says that the barn smells well…. they grow on you!
Ken tells us that this year will be his first year in thirteen years that he has not had a volunteer gig on Labor Day weekend and that this year he will be staying home and staying safe.
MILKING COW DEMONSTRATION & NAMING CONTEST
We udderly can't wait for this contest...
Every year at the Michigan State Fair Presented by Ram Trucks, the
Oakland County Farm Bureau brings a milking cow to the fair! Hundreds of fair-goers are educated on the process of milking a cow throughout the weekend! Since there were so many participants who wanted to learn how to milk a cow, the Oakland County Farm Bureau got a second cow to bring to the fair in-person in 2021.
NAME OUR NEW COW! - Comment a name suggestion on Facebook for the new milking cow and the top five names will be presented to Oakland County Farm Bureau and a winner will be announced on Monday!
The winner will receive a Family-4-Pack to attend the Michigan State Fair in 2021!
