STATE FAIR HISTORY

Today on day three of the Virtual Michigan State Fair Presented by Ram Trucks, we are excited to showcase an item that was very popular from the 1900s-1960s. Do you collect souvenirs when you attend the fair? It could be a plush animal from a carnival game, an item from our vendors or what about the yearly Michigan State Fair pins?

This is a Ruby Glass toothpick holder that was a popular souvenir at the Michigan State Fair in 1912! It was especially popular because you could personalize them with names and dates, so each glass was unique to the guest! These also came in various shapes and sizes ranging from pitchers, tumblers, finger bowls and flower vases.

VOLUNTEER HIGHLIGHT

Did you know that every year the Michigan State Fair Presented by Ram Trucks has between 500-1000 volunteers throughout the weekend?

Blue Care Network of Michigan is the sponsor of our volunteer program and it goes without saying that volunteers are critical to the success of the Michigan State Fair. Meet Joe Kish – Joe is a Detroit Shriners and the Circus Director for the Detroit Shrine Circus who has been volunteering with us since 2012. Joe is responsible for all of the behind the scenes magic and works months ahead of time to make sure that the Circus is ready for their presentation at the fair!

Joe exclaims that his favorite memory during the Michigan State Fair was when the High Wire Performer took his fez and wore it throughout his entire act – how exciting is that! He tells us that he continues to volunteer because of the children. His best advice for those who want to volunteer is that no matter the position you volunteer for, make sure you look around and take in the moment when volunteering. The smile of the fair-goers and those around you will make the entire experience. Remember that you might have had a little bit of influence in making that smile happen.

When Joe is not volunteering, you will often see him promoting the Shrine Hospitals for Children. Did you know that this year the Michigan State Fair is giving back to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Today during our Volunteer Highlight, we are also featuring our long time volunteer, Walter Slan. Walter has worked in various positions from banding, to escorting and is always willing to lend a hand wherever he's needed.

Walter has been volunteering with us since the second year of the Michigan State Fair and has been coming back ever since.
He exclaims that the amount of energy and compassion that the Manager of the Fair, Blair, has shown in bringing back the Fair and making it great again, made him want to be a part of it. His favorite part about the fair is
enjoy interacting with staff and visitors.

When Walter is not volunteering he is an Eldercare Consultant and assists families with geriatric care helping them with budgets, care options and assisted living placement in Michigan and Florida. He tells us that without the physical presence at the Fair I continue to be busy with work and planning travel.

Let's give Walter a big thank you for volunteering with us all these years!

Did you know Oakland County Parks and Recreation is funded by a millage? The parks system has welcomed visitors since 1966 and never increased its millage rate.

The current .2310 millage rate is set to expire Dec. 31, 2021. On Nov. 3, 2020, residents will be asked to vote on a millage replacement and increase to .35 mills to improve, operate, and maintain parks, open space and water areas, trails and recreation activities. The .35 rate will cost the owner of a home or business valued at $200,000 (taxable value of $100,000) approximately $35/year.

If approved, this new millage funding will:

▪ Allow OCPR to offer free annual vehicle permits to Oakland County residents who are seniors (62+), active military, veterans, and residents with permanent disabilities

▪ Refresh parks system assets to meet current and future needs

▪ Expand trails throughout Oakland County

▪ Enhance outreach and support of local recreation programs

▪ Increase environmental conservation efforts across the 910 square miles of Oakland County to protect important natural habitats
